You Aren’t Defined by What You Do

Hey there, friend.

I don’t know what your week’s been like or what you have on your to-do list today, but can we take a second to remember something super important together that could totally change how we’re approaching life?

I hope you have a moment to spare for this, because if you let it soak in, it is really powerful stuff.

So, you ready? Here it is.

You are not defined by what you do.

That’s right. You are not defined by what you do 9-5 or what you accomplish in a workday. You are not what you do to earn a paycheck, whether you love your work or hate it.

You aren’t defined by the pile of dirty laundry you’ve neglected, or the list of errands you haven’t finished yet.

You are not your relationship status—whether that’s happily (or unhappily) single, taken, married, separated, or divorced.

You’re not defined by the dreams you have, or the lack thereof. You are not defined by your education level or your decisions about the future.

You are not defined by what you spend your time thinking about, dreaming about, saying, or doing.

Because you’re not defined by a “do.” You’re defined by a “who.”

Jesus didn’t choose to die in your place so that you could spend the rest of your life trying to live up to some standard.

He literally nailed every standard there could possibly be to the cross and voided them.

When Jesus with His final few breaths cried out, “It is finished,” He truly meant it. Our identity as worthy, spotless, valuable daughters and sons of God was sealed; a done deal.

No more trying to earn our value. No more trying to prove our worthiness of love.

Jesus saved us from all of that, from a life of unending striving and performing.

And this isn’t just true spiritually.

Jesus looks at you exactly as you are, exactly where you are in life right now, and says with pride in His eyes, “You are mine, therefore you are perfect.”

See, it’s not about what you do; it’s about who you belong to. And when you belong to Jesus, your identity is determined by what He says you are: completely worthy, infinitely valuable, firmly secure, and unfathomably loved by the King of everything.

This is your identity.

No matter what the rest of your life looks like today, let’s remember this life-changing truth.

You aren’t defined by what you do. Not one bit.

You are defined by Jesus.
